Our MD Program is designed to offer you sufficient education and training to eliminate the 5th (review) semester prior to the USMLE step 1 exam. The standard MD curriculum contains an empty summer between the first and second years of basic science instruction, which is eliminated in the ZSOM curriculum. You’ll find we’ve eliminated a lot of that ‘traditional’ nonsense here at ZSOM.
Zlatko SOM compresses the timeframe for the basic sciences in these two ways, prior to our students taking step 1 of the USMLE, to prevent our students from forgetting the rote memory information contained on the step 1 exam and then having to relearn it in an otherwise unnecessary 5th semester.
It is commonly acknowledged among US physicians, that almost no US licensed physicians who are 5 years beyond graduation from medical school, can still pass step 1 of the USMLE. Much of the material on step 1 of the USMLE is never used in a physician’s practice and the questions rely on considerable amounts of rote memorization that is simply forgotten over time.
